Children
Children are important to the life and worship of First Presbyterian Church. We want children to feel welcome and we try to make their experiences in the church comfortable and meaningful. Sunday Church School is offered each week from 9:50 until 10:45 a.m.
Older Children are encouraged to attend worship services with their families. During the 11:00 a.m. worship service, "Children's Church" is offered for four-year-olds and consists of a Bible story, craft or activity and a snack. "Gateways to Worship "is a program intended to teach kindergartners and first graders about worship. Children leave the worship service during the singing of the second hymn to attend these classes which are taught by parent volunteers. Skilled childcare is available from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sundays.
Youth
First Presbyterian Church has a vibrant and active ministry with their youth and families. Led by youth and a team of outstanding advisors and teachers, the church seeks to be faithful to the mission of the Presbyterian Youth Connection. Our ministry includes fellowship, service, study, and worship. Middle School and High School youth meet each Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. for breakfast and fellowship before they go to their separate Sunday School classes at 9:50 a.m. On most Sundays, Presbyterian Youth Connection fellowship meets from 6:00-7:30 p.m.
Weekday Preschool
The Preschool program is designed for children ages 18 months through age four. As a ministry of First Presbyterian Church, the mission of the Preschool is to nurture the growth of children and their families by providing a Christian environment for children's spiritual, intellectual and social enrichment that helps them learn and develop as children of God. Call the Preschool at 762-2066 for more information.
Adults
The purpose of First Presbyterian Church's adult education program is to involve members in the study of Scripture and Christian theology and tradition so that they are better able to seek God's will for their lives and to share God's word with others. The church strives to provide a balanced program including studies the following areas: the Bible, theology and church history, Christian parenting, spiritual growth and social/ethical questions and concerns. We seek to examine major issues affecting the faith community and the world and to facilitate spiritual growth and personal maturity to the end that we may more fully love God and our neighbors with our hearts, souls and minds.
In addition to Sunday Church School, the church offers a variety of other opportunities for growth and enrichment. These include classes taught as part of the Wednesday Night Live program, Adult classes during Vacation Bible School, the Averette Lecture Series (a series of seminars that replaces adult Sunday School during the month of January) and special small studies for interest groups.
Music
The Music Ministry of the First Presbyterian Church encompasses a large program for all ages. Its choirs are comprised entirely of volunteers who are responsible for quality musical leadership fifty-two weeks per year. We are committed to service, leadership and musical excellence, and new participants are always welcomed.
"Music at First", our church's musical outreach to the Wilmington community, provides quality concerts September through May.
Wednesday Night Live (September through May)
is an exciting mid-week program with activities and fellowship for the entire family. The night begins with dinner at 5:30 p.m. in Gilmour Hall. Children may participate in one of the choirs, hand chimes/handbells and/or craft-oriented activities. There are lectures and study classes for adults, as well. Skilled childcare is available from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m.
Presbyterian Women
The women of the church are invited to be members of Presbyterian Women, who meet monthly to study the Bible through standardized lessons or through books chosen for in-depth study. They also support many benevolent causes, both locally and worldwide. Their Bereavement Committee provides meals to families when there is a death in our church family.
