Officer Nominations- Class of 2027

The Nominating Committee is seeking your suggestions for members who might be elected to serve as church officers, Elders or Deacons. Ruling elders and deacons are people elected by the congregation from among its members. The nomination and election of ruling elders and deacons shall express the rich diversity of the congregation’s membership and shall guarantee participation and inclusiveness. Elders set policy and priorities for the entire church, looking mostly at big picture issues. Deacons focus on committee leadership, typically chairing one of our church committees during their third year of service. Nomination form is below.

Qualifications of Officers
Those members nominated as church officers should have the necessary gifts and abilities for office, and should be “persons of strong faith, dedicated discipleship, and love of Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Their manner of life should be a demonstration of the Christian gospel in the church and in the world.”

Ruling Elder Defined
Ruling elders, together with ministers of the Word and Sacrament, exercise leadership, government, spiritual discernment, and discipline and have responsibilities for the life of a congregation as well as the whole church, including ecumenical relationships.

Deacon Defined
The ministry of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of compassion, witness, and service, sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus Christ for the poor, the hungry, the sick, the lost, the friendless, the oppressed, those burdened by unjust policies or structures, or anyone in distress. Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love, sincere compassion, and sound judgment should be chosen for this ministry.

No Elder or Deacon is eligible for re-election to the same office (Session or Board of Deacons) until one year has passed from the completion of his/her last full term of office. But any Elder completing his/her term may be immediately eligible for election to the Board of Deacons, and any Deacon completing his/her term may be immediately eligible for election to the Session.

The Church Officer Nominating Committee will present a slate of nominees two weeks in advance of the Congregational Meeting so that all will have the opportunity to be informed. At the Congregational Meeting, the Committee will recommend these nominees’ election. The congregation may choose to elect all candidates by acclamation.

Additional nominations from the floor by any member of the congregation may be offered provided that persons being nominated meet the requirements for office, are eligible to serve, and indicate their willingness to serve if elected. If there are additional nominations, the meeting will recess and be reconvened two weeks later for voting by ballot.

Suggestions for the Nominating Committee
The Nominating Committee encourages suggestions for officers from members of the congregation and will receive them, gratefully, through May 19.
The nomination and election of Ruling Elders and Deacons shall be conducted in accordance with the Book of Order and the Governance Policy of First Presbyterian Church.
These Elders and Deacons will be elected to serve 3 year terms.
